In times past, the people of Europe have shown themselves capable of extreme "energy" in defense of their beliefs, right or wrong. They are in a moment of extreme vulnerability, a weakening that began with two successive decimations of the flower of their male population and the strategic overtake by a relatively quite benign United States, obviating their need to once again unify to repel a hostile force. I am American, and I feel deeply for the three and more millennium legacy of Europe that I am seeing die within my lifetime. But still, I hope though that somehow the Europeans can save themselves without resorting to another Hitler, or Stalin, or Napoleon. If only they could see as I do, the beauty and history and valor that their fathers embodied. If only they could find the courage to defend themselves. If only they could find the courage to survive.If only.
