In many swing-era songs, there is an engaging lyrical theme that is set against a lilt in the melody that disclaims that theme just a little. It’s as if to indicate that the song isn’t taking itself too seriously. Sometimes the theme is heavy enough that the disclaimer is welcome. In the swing versions of Moonlight Cocktails, the lilt takes the form of syncopation, which can be annoying, and the theme is fantasy – not heavy at all. The Rivieras’ version removes the syncopation, so the fantastic theme emerges nicely. That’s what I love about this recording.
