The Annette Hanshaw version is 7 times better. Ruth Etting was a no talent who sold sex appeal to put a song over. She also slept her way to fame bankrolled by her gangster boyfriend. This is an example of the more things change the more they stay the same.

Those who criticize the audio quality of these old recordings and movies should remember the primitive equipment used in those days. Many performers sounded much better in real life. John Gilbert, for instance, saw his career ruined despite having a normal voice.

In early 1955, I bought a record in a junk shop for a dime." Mean to Me" and" Button Up Your Overcoat" by Ruth Etting--and I have been listening to her ever since.

It was written in 1929, music by Fred Ahlert, lyrics by Roy Turk. I think but am not sure it was written for the movie "Simple Simon". However Annette Hanshaw also sang it superbly.
