Jazz in a basement bar, the moon’s on the rain
Drunk too much, spent too much, penniless again
Oh, sweetheart, where are you tonight?
I remember when we used to walk by the Thames
The lights on the embankment like jewels on chains
I’ll never forget what you said at the start
You said «I'll put a string of lights 'round your heart»
I’ve got your photograph, the one that you signed
Tucked in my pocket, all tattered by time
Oh, sweetheart who’s with you tonight?
Are you there at the roundabouts, down in the park
Where you sneak through the railings
When it’s Locked after dark?
Is she learning the song you taught me at the start?
The one the bells and the banjos played on our hearts
Now the bars are all empty, everybody’s gone home
Perhaps I’ll walk down the embankment alone
Oh, sweetheart, I’m glad that we met
And that there’s jazz in the basement bars
And jewels on chains
'Cause I’ve drunk too much
And spent too much
But there’s moon on the rain
First saw them in the Moir Hall in the Mitchell Theatre in Glasgow in 1987, a full year before `Perfect` hit the top of the charts - a three-piece, they hadn`t found their drummer yet! Ran up enthusiastically to the sound desk, and asked the guys to record the gig - and they did. Still got the cassette recording somewhere, with some tracks which didn`t make the album. Still love every single track I heard them play, they were such a special band.
A beautiful voice and a great band. All songs (except one) of fairground attraction (this too) had been written by Mark E. Nevin (the man at the guitar) who left the group very soon because of "arguments". What a pity. You must be a genius to write exceptional songs like this.
All-time fave for sure. There must have been certain type of magic when they did the recording in small town school house on cold winter days, spending all their time together, it resonates in every way in that album. FGA forever!
A beautiful album a beautiful voice i fell in love with my wife even before I met her with those songs and they were great live I seen them in Dublin in the olympia theatre it was magical
Such a great album - but this is my favourite of theirs! Such a wonderful song! The lyrics are so discriptive I can see visuals for the whole song in my mind!
