In the 60s I had the pleasure of seeing him in the shows that DJ Murray the K sponsored at the Brooklyn Fox theater. He would be on the bill with numerous other acts, each singing a few of their recordings (hits). He was very good in person and always brought the house down. I then saw him again in the 80s somewhere with Cissy Houston as they had an album of duets with each other out. He sounded even better. I think I read somewhere that his voice was classically trained.
