EDWARD LEE MORGAN had two mentors as a teenager...CLIFFORD BENJAMIN BROWN, SR. and JOHN BIRKS GILLESPIE...WAYNE SHORTER was heavily influenced by THEODORE WALTER ROLLINS and JOHN WILLIAM COLTRANE, SR. ROBERT HENRY TIMMONS was heavily influenced by EARL RUDOLPH POWELL. JAMES RALEIGH MERRITT was heavily influenced by JAMES BLANTON and OSCAR PETTIFORD. ARTHUR WILLIAM BLAKEY, SR. was heavily influenced by WILLIAM HENRY WEBB, EUGENE BERTRAM KRUPA, WILLIAM RANDOLPH COLE, JONATHAN DAVID SAMUEL JONES, SIDNEY CATLETT and KENNETH SPEARMAN CLARKE. Bu was from the first generation of modern jazz drummers along with Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Shelly Manne, Stan Levey, Denzil Best, Don Lamond, Roy Porter, Shadow Wilson, Chico Hamilton and Roy Haynes.

Had the great fortune to see these guys at the Village Gate more than a dozen times from so close up they would bum old gold straights from me and drizzle sweat into my rum & coke. Saw Art at the Russian River Jazz Fest in the mid-80s too. OMG!!

Those were the days---when one could go anywhere in New York for a good meal and great jazz. I had the good fortune to meet ---and have some stimulating conversations---with Art Blakey, as well as get to watch and listen to him. A superb musician and one of the greats of all time on those drums.
